Boko boko and bata bata: Japanese Onomatopeia

Boko boko and bata bata: Japanese Onomatopeia

– Vol.1 –

ARC teacher Mimi Sensei will answer your questions regarding Japanese language.

Q:I really like Japanese manga, especially “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba”. From time to time I hear words like boko boko or bata bata: what kind of words are those?

As you, there are so many people who decided to start learning Japanese because they love anime and manga.

There’s no better way to improve your Japanese than to keep doing what you are passionate about. Ganbatte kudasai!

Regarding boko boko and bata bata. These words in Japanese are called “onomatope”, and are used to mimic a sound or an idea.

Even if to people from certain countries, the use of words like boko boko and bata bata might sound childish, in Japan we have tons, really hundreds of them!

From the elementary school kid to the old man at the station, every Japanese uses them frequently.

Try to remember as much as you can…but you have to know that it won’t be easy to master the usage of onomatopoeias.

For the moment, I would suggest you enjoy the way how anime and manga use onomatopoeias.

And why not try to place one of them during a conversation with a Japanese person?

Maybe that person will looked puzzled if your usage is not too spontaneous, but that is for sure the best way to gradually become able to speak naturally and more and more like a native speaker.
