We also use the word <em>red<\/em> in the expression \u201ca red stranger\u201d (<em>akano tanin<\/em>) to say that someone is a complete stranger.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u00a0If you only look at these two examples, you might think that the color red is seen negatively by Japanese people, but it\u2019s not like that. In both the previous examples the word <em>red<\/em> is used to express \u201cclear at first sight\u201d, that something is evident and easily understandable.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u00a0In Japan if you say <em>red,<\/em> I think the majority of the people will think about \u201cpassion\u201d. Also, Japanese babies have the color blue associated with boys, and red associated with girls.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u00a0There are many other Japanese idioms using color words. For example, the expression \u201cyellow voice&#8221; to describe an unusually high pitched voice, or &#8220;black belly&#8221;, to say something is mean, black-hearted&#8230; It can be interesting to search for a color and find out what idioms it is associated with.
