友達と話した時、友達はよく「わからない」という言葉を使った。
それで、私は友だちが理解できないのだと思って、難しくて、長い説明をしたが、実は、友達の伝えたかったのは「まだ知らない」、つまり、「まだ決めていない」ということだ。
日本語では、「わからない」は「知らない」の意味を表すことができる。英語で、この言葉は「知らない」の意味を全然持っていない。知らない場合、まだ決めていなかった場合、それをはっきりと言うべきだ。友だちによると、日本語では、そうというルールはないそうだ。
友達にいつも「君の説明は長くて分かりにくいよ。」と言われて、恥ずかしい感じを持っていた。でも、私が、そんな間違いをしたのだから、仕方がない。私は大変迷惑な人になったと思う。

When talking to a friend of mine, they used the word “I don’t understand. [わからない]” often. So, I guessed they didn’t understand what I was saying, and I kept giving difficult and long-winded explanations. As it turns out, it wasn’t that they didn’t understand, but they wanted to say “I don’t know yet. [まだ知らない]”, or “I haven’t decided yet. [まだ決めていない]”.
In Japanese, “I don’t understand. [わからない]” is another way to say “I don’t know yet. [まだ知らない]”. In English, “I don’t understand. [わからない]” never means “I don’t know yet. [まだ知らない]”. When you don’t know, or you haven’t decided yet, it’s best to convey that clearly. As I learned from my friend, the same rule doesn’t seem to exist in Japanese.
My friend frequently tells me “Your explanations are long and hard to understand!”, and that makes me feel very embarrassed. However, I can’t help but keep making the same mistake. I think I’ve become quite a difficult person.
